Sat 26 May - 1st XI v Crockham Hill

Posted on 27th May in 1sts Match Reports, 2007

Result: Lost by 13 runs
Crockham Hill 167-7
Shoreham 154 all out 39.1 overs

A good toss to win by Shoreham saw Crockham Hill struggle against the new ball pace of James Trick and the pleasing economy of Ed Walker. Two or three crucial chances were missed (no culprits to be named but you know who you are…) which allowed Crockham Hill to reach 109 before losing their 3rd wicket. Great accuracy from Bob Stacey (3-30 off 9) and Peter Wright (3-22 off 7) then saw the home side’s innings lose momentum in the second half and James Trick finally picked up a tailender (1-31 off 9) but Ed remained wicketless (0-34 off 9).

In reply Shoreham’s openers encountered an experienced pair of seamers who offered little width, but newcomer Andy Monteith (30) showed much promise and power before under-clubbing what would have been a six to long-on were it not for a sharply taken catch by Crockham Hill’s outfielder. Nick Walker Snr (27) proved more pedestrian but nonetheless at the halfway point only 5 runs an over were still needed and 8 wickets remained in hand. However miserly bowling from two slow left-armers served to undo Shoreham’s efforts with Wright, Pearce, Wells and Hoffmann reaching double figures but unable to get on top of the attack. A late scamper from Bob Stacey and Ed Walker proved too little too late and the inings subsided in the final over.

Despite the final outcome there were some positive messages to take from the afternoon - a good bowling performance was supported by excellent ground fielding. With a little more batting power we should have the ability to compete with all-comers in this league.

If you look carefully you’ll notice a slight gap between bat and pad…
