Sun 17 June - Waggoners

Posted on 17th June in 2007, Friendly Match Reports

Shoreham won the toss and inserted Waggoners to bat on the top strip at Shoreham… Waggoners lost early wickets thanks to the consistent and parsimonious bowling of Simms and Rivett J and Shoreham held onto most of the important catches. Bowling honours were shared between the brothers Rivett, Simms, Setterfield, Wynn-Jones, Hofmann and Hayslett, aged 14, who took two key wickets in the last overs of Waggoners’ innings on debut. In the end, Waggoners were restricted to 195 runs for 9 off approx. 43 overs.

Shoreham’s innings got off to a shaky start: Steve Newitt was bowled by a jaffer early on and Brad Simms suffered the same fate. With 30 runs on the board, Zack came in to bat and hit 15 off his first 4 deliveries. This was no fluke though and he continued to decimate Waggoners’ attack. With Hofmann blocking up one end and scoring at a more demure rate, Zack continued to rack up the runs, scoring 58 off fewer balls including five sixes(!) With 20 overs to go, Shoreham needed 100 runs; with 17 overs left, Shoreham needed 77. Then Zack got out to a straight one from a spinner and Hofmann followed next ball, plumb LBW for 51. Shoreham proceeded to collapse in traditional style with wicket following wicket. Nos. 10 + 11 (Rivett G and Hayslett) had a combined age of 28 but they batted with wisdom beyond their years to frustrate Waggoners opening bowlers. An honourable and enjoyable draw was a great result for Shoreham, who ended on 151 for 9.

If your batting was as sharp as your jokes you might’ve got some runs this season!
