Sun 15 June - Waggoners

Posted on 20th June in 2008, Friendly Match Reports

So near and yet so far.
Waggoners 126 all out beat Shoreham 115 all out by 11 runs.

With a lot of new faces and a few familiar ones, Sean Bromfield the Sunday skipper lost another toss and Shoreham were put into field on a gloriously sunny day.

The skipper with no hesitation threw the new ball to his younger brother James (the Bomber Bromfield) and the two nearly combined with the first ball of the game, as Waggoners openers tried a quick single, the agile skippers threw at the stumps with the batsmen know where in sight only for his brother to deflect the ball away !!! (cheers bruv)

At the other end, on hearing the Australian accent in the changing room the skipper threw the ball to his new overseas player Russell Smith. He did not disappoint with a skilful lesson in the ART OF SWING BOWLING and persistent APPEALING !!!

The opening bowlers did a fantastic job in keeping Waggoners tied down and on another day could have had at least 3 wickets a piece, instead Bromfield ended up with figures of 9 overs 1 maiden 0 wickets for 35 runs and Smith 9 overs 2 maidens 1 wicket for 30 runs !!

After the opening pair the skipper turned to the experienced Bob Sims and he turned out to be the pick of the bowlers turning in a great performance. With a mixture of good line and length and backed up with some great fielding he created havoc from the bottom end and managed to get the prized wicket of G Potter the classy Waggoners batsmen, aided by a great catch from Martin Wells without his gloves on !!! ( I knew there was TELFON on those gloves !!).

Sims finished his 6 over spell for 13runs and 2 wickets but in addition helped with 2 run outs !! great effort !!

The skipper also weighed in with some bowling finishing with figures of 8 overs 1 maiden for 24 runs and 1 wicket. But if Bob was the star of the day then Russell Brooks was the surprise of the day clearing up the Waggoners tail-end finshing with impressive figures of 3 wickets for 9 runs !! including a caught and bowled where he knocked poor steve gear out of the way in the process

After a great bowling effort the team returned to the pavilion for a famous Bromfield tea..

The Shoreham innings got of to a bright start and the skipper was confident of victory even with a weak batting line-up. The game got of to a good start with the skipper opening up with Martin Wells and the two looked comfortable together against the experienced Waggoners attack of Wardle and Fox.

Unfortunately Wells was TRIGGERED for 6 (IBW on a SUNDAY !! the skipper nearly had a heart attack) !!! this started a mini collapse with the Richard Nash getting a golden and Steve Gear getting 1 !! Shoreham all of a sudden were 17 for 3. this brought the impressive Russell Smith to the crease and along with the Skipper they combined well together to take Shoreham to 47. But Smith misjudged a slow one and was caught brilliantly at short mid wicket !!

This brought the Bromfield Brothers together at the crease and James looked impressive when he flicked one off his legs for a 4 off his first ball !! Unfortunately it didn’t take long until he played inside one and his off stump when flying !!

With the skipper having more PARTNERS than CHRIS BROWN AT A SHOREHAM BARN DANCE !! things when from bad to worse with the side slumping to 63-6 and Russelll Brooks got another DUCK !! and then Kumar made a quick fire 4 !! Shoreham where in big trouble at 66-7 and then 68-8 after Bob Sims was out for 1!!

It was up to the skipper to pull the innings forward and he duly obliged hogging the strike and putting waggoners on the back foot, hitting the attack to every corner of the ground !!

was the impossible possible !!

the spectators were growing with C Brown and P Barratt enjoying a few beers in the pavilion and with the tension growing the Waggoners fielders were starting to lose believe.

With the score on 115 and 3 overs to go, it looked on, but the opener Fox was brought back into the attack and with Bromfield trying to score he got an inside edge onto the stumps bringing to end a heroic performance, finishing on 76, in an innings which included 15, 4’s !!

So Shoreham Slumped to another defeat on a Sunday !!

The bandwagon rolls into Wrotham next week !!! come on boys we need a win !!!
